If you date a Northwest Vista Lady Wildcats basketball player, she most likely will beat you in a game of one-on-one and school you in the classroom-considering nine of them made the league's All-Academic team. After starting the season 0-2, The Lady Wildcats posted a 17-4 season record and captured the South Texas Club Sports League Championship (STCSL).
Under the guidance of Coach Daniel Johnson, the Lady Wildcats reeled off 10 wins in a row after dropping the first two games of the season. The STCSL might not be the NCAA with its major universities, highly touted recruits, or fancy arenas, but competitiveness is one thing that is not lacking. The league is no joke and consists of other schools from the ACCD system, Victoria College, Cy-Fair College in Houston, Southwest Texas Junior College, and surrounding military base teams.
Team unity is a vital part of Coach Johnson's philosophy along with rebounding and defense. Quite a good formula-considering in his fifth year as coach he won South Texas Club Sports League 'Coach of the Year' honors "When I won I was shocked and surprised, I think the players deserve most of the credit.," said Coach Johnson.
Sadly, women's sports are overshadowed by men's sports, but don't sell the Lady Wildcats short. They run the motion offense and all of the ladies are capable of bringing the ball up the court and scoring. They have the STCSL's MVP, Lolita Franklin, who played a key role in the success of the Lady Wildcats, averaging 20 points and 8 rebounds a game for the season. In addition, Katherine Enriquez and Nicole Chapman played well and were named to the league's All-Second team.
After a first round bye in the STCSL's Championship Tournament, The Lady Wildcats cruised through to the championship tournament and blew out Southwest Texas Junior College in the championship game 68-43.
Brittney Jackson brought home the tournament's MVP trophy and an earned All-First Tournament team spot averaging 18 points and 5 steals a game. "Brittney's defense was excellent during the tournament and was one of the main reasons she was named the tournament's MVP," said Coach Johnson.
Jackson played the role of the 6th man, off the bench for most of the season. It's a tough role to handle if you are used to being a starter, but on a team with no Terrell-Owens-like egos the result was a South Texas Sports Club League title. Tricia Gonzales also elevated her game in the tournament, earning All-First Tournament team honors.
It's a coach's dream-nine of your fourteen players on the All-Academic Team, a league MVP, and the league championship. Congratulations to the Northwest Vista Lady Wildcats Basketball team on a spectacular season and good luck next year.
The 2008-2009 Northwest Vista Lady Wildcats Basketball Team: April Montes, Lolita Franklin, Brittney Jackson, Melissa Vanlandingham, Brittney Watters, Natalie Vasquez, Heidi Kuykendall, Tricia Gonzalez, Nicole Chapman, Jasmin Todd, Samantha Fernandez, Katherine Enriquez, Kelly Mathis, and Victoria Price.
